Proposed Green Zones

Proposal 3
Cultural & Historical Landscape Protection
-
Asklepieion Sanctuary & Surrounding Cypress Groves:
-
Combining cultural heritage protection with ecological buffers.
As the historical birthplace of Hippocratic medicine, this area holds symbolic and practical grounds for a strict "Zero Chemical / Medicinal Organic" zone under Article 191 TFEU.
Proposal 2
Agricultural Buffer & Aquifer Recharge Zones
-
Central Agricultural Plain (Antimachia – Pyli – Linopotis Axis):
-
Under Directive 2009/128/EC Article 11 & 12, Member States must restrict pesticide applications in areas rechargeing underground drinking water aquifers.
The central plain supplies a significant portion of Kos's agricultural yield and fresh water; enforcing synthetic-pesticide-free practices here protects local groundwater reserves.
Proposal 1
Non-GMO & Heritage Seed Preservation Initiative
-
Local Producer Certification: Establish an "Organic & Non-GMO Kos" quality mark for local farmers who commit to non-GMO crops and indigenous seed varieties.
-
Supply Chain Integration: Connect local non-GMO farms directly with hotels, food trucks, pop-up venues, and restaurants across Kos to establish sustainable farm-o-table networks.

Proposal 4
Expansion of Marine Protected Zones (MPAs)
-
Kefalos Bay & Agios Stefanos Islet: Critical underwater ecosystems with dense Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds that are vulnerable to anchoring damage, agricultural run-off, and chemical pollution.
-
Kardamena / South Coast Marine Belt: Nesting and feeding grounds for protected loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) and the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus).
